So you've booked your airline tickets, and know which places you want to visit for your next vacation. What next? Your accomodation, definitely. So which one?
Backpackers' Type or 5-Star Hotel Type?
If you want to maximize every penny spent on your trip, consider your accommodation well. And by well, I mean last. And your face goes huh?
Let me explain. Hotels take up a large chunk in your travel expenses but are variable unlike airline tickets, so before you do any bookings, make sure you book them wisely. Of course, we all want to stay in the best hotels during our trips. I was a splurger on hotels before, my reasoning being that I am on vacation, so I should not think about money! But I was wrong. Consider this, you can save up the money you spend on hotels and book another trip with those savings! Just make sure you're not missing out on must-do stuff by altogether being too stingy. You have to strike a balance somewhere. Remember, the best trips are not measured by how much you spent but on your learnings and the company you kept.
Now, why book your hotel last if you want to save on some money? Your itinerary should be finalized first, never ever book a hotel before you do this. Then take a closer look at your itinerary.
Will you be spending majority of your time outside the hotel?
Will you be leaving early and coming back late at night?
Are you going out to eat dinner somewhere else or having drinks at night?
Will you be exploring the night scene?
If yes, choose a budget hotel because you will only need a place to sleep and take a shower. Booking an expensive hotel will not be wise since you will not be able to enjoy its amenities anyway. If you have a free and easy itinerary, you would be better off with an expensive hotel, one that you could just spend hours chillin'.
Here are some of the places I visited and the kind of hotel I will implore you to take.
Puerto Princesa, Palawan - Budget Hotel
Coron, Palawan - Budget Hotel
Boracay - Expensive Hotel
Bohol - Expensive Hotel
Cebu - Budget Hotel
Laoag, Ilocos - Budget Hotel
Vigan, Ilocos - Budget Hotel
Pagudpud, Ilocos - Expensive Hotel
Laiya, Batangas - Expensive Hotel
Singapore - Budget Hotel
Hong Kong - Budget Hotel
Macau - Budget Hotel
US - Budget Hotel
Notice that itineraries for budget hotels are packed with places to go to and most of your time is spent away from the hotel.
So now, which one is it going to be? I hope I made the choice somehow easier for you.
